The type of peppermint (Mentha piperita) is in the genus of mint (Mentha, subfamily: Nepetoideae) in the mint family (Lamiaceae), which belongs to the order Lamiales. Wild-growing relatives of peppermint can be found all over Europe. Peppermint is a perennial herbaceous plant. It grows up to 90 cm high and has a square-section trunk. The pointed, petiolate leaves are opposite, narrowly ovate to lanceolate and have a serrated margin. When crushed, the leaves have a characteristic smell. Flowering time is from July to September.
Production method peppermint essential oil
The essential peppermint oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the fresh or slightly dried herb of the peppermint (Mentha piperita). Steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds. Due to the immiscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases separate easily on cooling and the essential oil can be separated easily. The yield is between 0.1 and 1.0%.
