Where does the Eucalyptus Essential Oil come from?
The Australian blue gum can sometimes reach a height of 100 meters, making it one of the tallest trees in the world. There are over 500 species of eucalyptus trees, with tough long and narrow blue-green leaves, creamy white flowers and soft pale bark.
The 'eu' and 'kalypto' mean 'good' and 'covered' in Greek, referring to the cup-shaped membrane that covers the flower bud, which is discarded as the flower expands.
The Australian Aborigines call it 'Kino' and use the leaves to cover serious wounds. Eucalyptus oil was introduced to Europe in 1788 and the first oil to be exported to England was called 'Sydney peppermint'. It was extracted from Eucalyptus peperita, a more industrial type of essential oil.
The tree uses a lot of water during cultivation and has been used to clean the cleared land, to drain the water from swamps where malaria mosquitoes can be found. It was thought that the tree would prevent malaria in the past, because of this drainage action.
