Where does the Essential Oil Mint (field mint) come from?
Field mint (Mentha arvensis) is a perennial that belongs to the Lip Flower family (Labiatae or Lamiaceae). It is a plant of moist to wet, nutrient-rich soil: it can be found on arable land, on waterfronts, in swampy grasslands, along fens and in deciduous forests. .
The weakly fragrant plant grows to 15 to 45 cm high and has a square, hollow stem. The plant forms both underground and above-ground runners. The petiolate, hairy leaves are ovate to elliptical, 2 to 6.5 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide, and have a serrated margin.
Field mint blooms from July to autumn with purple flowers. The 2 to 3 mm long calyx is sparsely hairy on the inside and has almost triangular calyx teeth, which are slightly longer than they are wide. The flowers are arranged in two false whorls.
The fruit is a four-part split fruit.
